The course will run for five days typically Monday-Friday 9am-5pm, Saturdays are a rest/revision day and the Sunday 29th 9am-5pm will be the exam. If you wish to lifeguard on the beach, applications will open around February each year, you can apply to lifeguard as long as you have a SLSGB course booked at the time of application.
Each day will consist of a ‘wet’ and ‘dry’ training session, either side of a lunch break. Training will take place on Tregonhawke beach, Whitsand Bay.
We do have a number of wetsuits and boots at the surf school if you wish to use these, however it is strongly suggested you have your own wetsuit for this course as water temps in autumn/spring courses can be cold and we will be in the water for at least 2-3 hours per day.
There is a café at the top of the cliff, aptly named Cliff Top, however we would suggest a packed lunch each day. Please bring appropriate clothing for an autumn/spring day at the beach in the UK. Weather can be variable so warm clothes, hot drinks, sun cream, towel etc might all be appropriate. There is a kettle and fridge available at the training location.
Wet sessions will focus on rescue skills in the water including rescue boards, rescue tubes, team spinal extractions and general ocean-based skills. Dry training will focus on:
-Beach environment theory – waves, tides, rips etc.
-Patrolling as a lifeguard Communication systems including use of radios and lifeguard signals
-Adult, junior and baby CPR Adult, junior and baby choking
-Unconscious casualty management Treatment of medical conditions, wounds etc…
-How to work efficiently and effectively as part of a team
