Why a lesson?

We often get asked why to book a lesson rather than a rental, and whilst we’ll explain in depth below, here’s the main 3 reasons.

  • Safety, we’ll not only keep you safe during your lesson, we’ll help you to spot hazards in future too.
  • Technique, though general water fitness is great to have, not much directly transfers to surfing and it can feel like a quite unintuitive motion to catch a wave and then pop up.
  • Shortcut to fun – we give feedback on multiple waves in each session, helping you to avoid picking up bad habits and to more quickly learn the techniques to have a successful surf.

Surfing is awesome – it’s also pretty tricky, there’s a lot that lines up to get the perfect wave, you need to pick the right board for your skill level and style, find the right point to paddle out and avoid ocean hazards, and then you need to pop up from your tummy to you feet while staying balanced while shooting down a wave, phew!

In the excitement of catching a wave it’s common to get so caught up in the moment that we can’t tell why we keep falling, can’t get across the wave or why our pop up doesn’t feel easy. Our coaches have worked with countless folks of all ages and fitness backgrounds and spend all our professional time watching our guests and the sea, we can spot things you might not even know you’re doing. Even our instructors ask for feedback from other coaches.

We can help you to become a sea savvy independent surfer, we can also give you a helping hand with getting into the waves so you can enjoy the feeling and know why you’re persevering to becoming an independent surfer. Mostly though, we’re interested in what it is you want to achieve from the session and making sure you have a positive time in the ocean.

Adventure Bay welcomes many renters back to our beach as they come back for a surf lesson after realising it’s a little harder than it looks! You can watch a short video here to meet Lucie who found that she’d get way more out of her beach time by booking a lesson.

Your motives might be to give your little one or yourself a safe and supported experience in the sea, that’s fine too! If you want more 1-1 support book a private or semi private session and have a coach close by at all times.
